« Gender in Translation » is a multidisciplinary, Franco-American operation, dedicated to questioning the notion of gender in the social sciences, in philosophy, and in artistic fields. This event is presented by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the US (at the San Francisco Office) and the entire operation will take place between December 2015 and the fall of 2016, both in Berkeley and in San Francisco.
Philosophers, social scientists, and artists share the mission of helping us decipher and translate the articulation between sex and gender. This will be the main goal of these events, where we will grasp the concept of gender as a practice of translation and creation.
The operation will feature an academic symposium, organized by the University of California, Berkeley. Following a semiological and discursive approach, American and French thinkers will enter into an exchange with the aim of broadening their reflections on the concept of “Gender in Translation.”
A variety of artistic events will be organized around this academic symposium, in partnership with artistic institutions of San Francisco, such as San Francisco Art Institute, California College of the Arts, ODC, and Wattis Institute. Each event will be staging and representing the emergence and attribution of gender from an artistic perspective.
This project is made possible thanks to the generous support of Institut Français.
